A-Trust Successfully Completes EU Project POTENTIAL
03.09.2025
Paving the Way for Qualified Signatures in the EU Digital Identity Wallet
A-Trust has successfully completed the European pilot project POTENTIAL, marking a significant milestone in the implementation of the European Union Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet. This initiative is part of the European Digital Identity Framework and aims to promote digital inclusion and enable interoperability across all EU Member States.
As one of four large-scale pilot projects under the eIDAS Regulation, POTENTIAL demonstrated how essential digital services – particularly the Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) – can be used securely, seamlessly, and consistently across Europe through the Wallet. Under Article 5a.13, all Member States must, by 28 November 2027, provide citizens with at least one EUDI Wallet that offers free qualified electronic signatures for non-professional use. This will give millions of Europeans a simple and trusted way to access digital services – without technical barriers.
From Concept to Practice: Two Signature Scenarios Tested
Within the scope of POTENTIAL, A-Trust successfully implemented two practical use cases in a dedicated reference environment:
- Wallet-Driven QES: The document to be signed is delivered to the signer via a standardized RP-EUDIW interface. The Wallet displays the signature details and releases the process at the Qualified Trust Service Provider (QTSP).
- QTSP-Driven Signature: In this model, the requesting party transmits the signature data (document or hash) directly through an RP-QTSP interface. The Wallet authorizes the signing process and provides additional security mechanisms.
Test Environment Now Open to Partners
The project’s test and reference environment is now available to interested partner organizations. Businesses and developers can trial Wallet-based signature integration in their own applications – hands-on and without lengthy preparations.
Interested parties can contact the A-Trust Sales Team for access and to discuss deployment options.
Looking Ahead: More Than Just Signatures
The future potential of the EUDI Wallet extends well beyond signature services. It will also support digital identity credentials – such as ID Austria – for quick and convenient online identification. This paves the way for a Europe where citizens can access a wide range of digital services smoothly, securely, and across borders – from signing contracts to completing administrative transactions.
