Digital Europe: eIDAS Regulation adopted in the EU Parliament

European flag flying in the wind

Last Thursday, the EU Parliament officially approved the regulation on the European Digital Identity Framework - the European legislation for electronic identification and trust services, which includes digital identity and digital signatures - by a large majority. This also lays the legal foundation for the EU Wallet, a Europe-wide digital wallet that all EU member states must provide to their citizens by fall 2026.

Markus Vesely, CEO of A-Trust, also welcomes this step: "It is another important step towards a digitalized and interconnected Europe. As a qualified trust service provider, we are an essential part of this infrastructure and are particularly interested in the latest developments relating to the EU wallet and qualified attributes."

Austria has been considered a role model in terms of digitalization and eGovernment for a long time. With ID Austria, several digital IDs and documents are already available: Numerous users already use the digital driving license, the digital car registration certificate or the digital proof of age. ID Austria is already recognized throughout the EU thanks to its eIDAS notification and it will also be possible to identify yourself in EU member states with your own eID wallet in the future.

However, not only private individuals will benefit from the new developments relating to the EU Wallet and qualified attributes: Doing business across borders will be easier than ever before, without sacrificing security.

Markus Vesely therefore draws a positive conclusion: "We are proud to be able to make a contribution to this cause and will continue to play our part in promoting digitalization and, above all, making it more secure."
