ID Austria: Things to know about two-factor authentication

On 05.12.2023, the conversion of Handy-Signatur to full operation of ID Austria is imminent. In our last news article, we already answered the most important FAQ about the changeover for you.

Due to the high level of interest, we summarize the different options for two-factor authentication for you here once again:

1. Fingerprint scan or facial recognition of your own smartphone in the "Digitales Amt" app or in your „A-Trust Signatur“ app

A common type of authentication is the use of biometrics. This is how you authenticate yourself via fingerprint scan or facial recognition in the A-Trust Signature app (formerly "Handy-Signatur App") or in the "Digitales Amt" app

2. entering the device PIN in the „A-Trust Signatur“ app (without biometrics)

If you want to forgo biometrics, you can also approve signatures or logins easily and conveniently by entering your own device PIN in the A-Trust Signature app.

3. FIDO token (without smartphone and without biometrics)

People who do not want to use a smartphone can use a so-called FIDO token - a separate security key in the form of a USB stick - to authenticate themselves. Please note that only certain FIDO2 tokens can be linked to the ID Austria. All FIDO tokens available in the A-Trust webshop are guaranteed to be linkable with ID Austria, for example. You can link a suitable FIDO token to your ID Austria in just a few steps in your A-Trust account under "Link new FIDO token".
